Lecture by Thierry DUTOIT, Ecologist and CNRS Research Director (IMBE) and Emma LEONE, PhD student in Ecology (IMBE)

On Wednesday 24 September at 7.00 pm, a conference will be held by Thierry Dutoit, Ecologist, CNRS Research Director at IMBE and Emma LEONE, doctoral student in ecology at IMBE entitled

"Mauvais souvenirs militaires dans les espaces naturels - comment dépolluer et renaturer? ".

As always, this event will be accessible in person at the Endoume marine station in Marseille as well as live from 7pm:

Endoume Wednesdays

Summary of the conference: The contamination of ecosystems by persistent substances from military munitions is a very worrying phenomenon, particularly as a result of the expansion of conflict zones around the world, but also in areas where there have been conflicts in the past or where there are military training, manufacturing or destruction sites for munitions.

This is particularly true of the Crau plain in the Bouches-du-Rhône region, a remarkable natural area that is now protected but has been heavily impacted by military activities since the end of the 19th century. Could nature-based solutions help to clean up and renaturalise this ecosystem while limiting the impact on its exceptional flora and fauna?

We look forward to seeing you there, live or by videoconference!

Field trip to the Musée du Cartonnage et de l'Imprimerie in Valréas

Musée du Cartonnage et de l'Impressionie de Valréas, as part of a field trip with 1st year Packaging, Emballage & Conditionnement BUT students from the Avignon University IUT.

As part of their training, 1st year Packaging, Emballage & Conditionnement (PEC) students from the Avignon University IUT had the opportunity to visit the Musée du Cartonnage et de l'Imprimerie in Valréas on Monday 16 June 2025.

This approach has enabled us to immerse ourselves in the history of packaging, witnessing the development of cardboard and printing techniques from the 19th century to the 1990s.

Our students had the opportunity to discover historic machines, the main stages in packaging design and traditional printing processes (offset, letterpress, etc.).

One of the highlights of the visit was the discovery of a fun experimentation area, where learning can take place in a more interactive and user-friendly way.

This educational outing provided a real immersion in the industrial history of packaging, as well as giving our students food for thought about current issues in the sector.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to the museum team for their warm welcome.
and the richness of the discussions!

A new biodiversity reserve: La Crau du Piboulon

Photo showing orchids from protected species.

Thanks in part to the work of Thierry Dutoit, director of research at CNRS at IMBE, La Crau du Piboulon, located between Alleins and Mallemort, has become the first biodiversity reserve in the Aix-Provence-Marseille Metropolitan Area.

Thierry and his colleagues (Hervé Ramone, Daniel Pavon, Elise Buisson, Anouk Courtial) discovered over 90 plant species in an area of 100 m², and counted a dozen orchid species, including Anacamptis coriophora subsp. fragransand two protected species, Serapias parviflora and Ophrys provincialis.

A fine example of how avoidance in advance is better than compensation and restoration in retrospect to conserve exceptional natural areas!

When education and industry meet around cosmetology and packaging!

Two representatives of ALPOL in the technology hall of the Avignon University IUT, accompanied by two teachers from the packaging department: Stéphane Sammartino and Chahine Abbas,

As part of a one-off partnership, the department BUT Packaging Emballage et Conditionnement (PEC) from Avignon IUT was asked by the company ALPOLvia its employees Stéphane Sammartino and Chahine Abbas.

The aim was to carry out vibration tests on cardboard packaging containing cosmetic products (bottles with foam pumps).

The cause: customer reports of leaks on delivery. Thanks to our vibration bench, we were able to simulate road transport conditions and test three different configurations to get a better idea of the source of the problem.

This intervention will enable ALPOL :

  • target the origin of the fault (containers or production line)
  • adjust its industrial processes
  • ensure reliable quality on arrival at the customer's premises

It's a partnership that perfectly illustrates the practical application of our teaching facilities, the strong link between training and the world of work, and the key role played by our alumni network - in this case, a graduate of the class of 2011, who initiated the matchmaking.

It's also a great opportunity to open up internship and work-study prospects for our future PEC students!

documentary series IMAGINED BY Jean-Christophe SEVIN, co-directed by Jean-Bapstiste Imbert

Photo showing a wall with frames on a reggae theme.

About the series

"Passeurs de reggae" is a series of six portraits of reggae players who have in common the need to build relationships between musicians, producers and audiences. They disseminate the music, but also the knowledge, contextualisations and ways of doing things that help to make it understood and loved.

Through their trajectories we explore the constitution of a world, that of reggae in France, from the 1980s to the present day.

They are: Hélène Lee (journalist, writer and documentary film-maker); Alexandre Grondeau (webjournalist, writer and documentary film-maker); Sébastien Carayol (journalist and exhibition curator); Aziz Azara (photographer, reggae evening organiser); Rémi Angles (record dealer and radio presenter); Anne Lechevalier (programmer).

They do not represent a distinct social group or an established category, such as that of cultural intermediary in the sociology of culture, which refers to professions with a high degree of formalisation.

This is why we use the term "passeur" to emphasise their roles rather than their status. Their profiles are heterogeneous and hybrid, and they may perform several functions at the same time. Their activities are inseparable from a passion that has found, in particular circumstances, the opportunity to become a profession or a source of income that is sometimes uncertain.

Léo ROCHER's thesis defence: Wednesday 10 April 2024 at 2:30 pm - amphitheatre of the Avignon University Institute of Technology (IUT)

Representative photo of a green field of vines.

After 3 years of work on the influence of grassing between vine rows on auxiliary arthropodswe are delighted to invite you to the thesis defence from Léo ROCHERentitled : "Identification of vegetation parameters favouring beneficial arthropods and associated ecological functions in viticulture: a correlative and experimental approach", which go to will take place on Wednesday 10 April at 2.30pm, within the IUT amphitheatre.

Summary of thesis:

The decline in biodiversity in agro-ecosystems is largely attributed to the rise of modern agriculture. The main causes are the destruction of semi-natural structures, the extension of the size of agricultural plots and the intensive use of inputs. Arthropods play an important role in enhancing essential ecosystem services such as pest regulation and pollination. Vegetation is a key factor in encouraging their presence. Plants provide crucial food resources and habitats for arthropods. To encourage these organisms in agro-ecosystems and restore the associated ecological functions, practices such as the introduction of semi-natural structures are relevant. In permanent crops such as vineyards, such structures can be set up within the plots. In the Mediterranean region, vineyard inter-row management often involves eliminating uncultivated vegetation for reasons of water competition and to control plant species considered harmful.

The aim of this thesis work is to gain a better understanding of how inter-row vegetation can encourage the presence of beneficial arthropods and the predation function, while limiting the proliferation of harmful plant species in Mediterranean vineyards (Luberon, France). Three main research questions were posed: (1) Does the presence of grass cover and its floristic composition influence the presence of ants, important players in the predation function in vines? (2) Which functional groups in the vegetation are linked to the abundance of predatory and pollinating arthropods and the predation function? (3) Does diversified and local grass cover increase the presence of beneficial arthropods, improve the predation function and limit the establishment of problem plant species?

In the first chapter we studied the response of ants to grass cover in 23 vineyards. Ants play a crucial role in predation in Mediterranean vineyards (Luberon, France). We tested the effect of three vegetation management methods on the diversity and frequency of ants: inter-row grassing, partial grassing and no grassing. We showed that the partially grassed vineyards had a greater diversity of ants than the non-grassed vineyards. Grass cover and the presence of perennial plants positively influenced ant richness, suggesting the importance of taking these factors into account in vegetation management. In the second chapter, we examined which characteristics of spontaneous vegetation influence beneficial arthropods and predation function in 37 vineyards. We found that nectariferous flower cover and plant species richness favoured most groups of beneficial arthropods, as well as the predation function. These results highlight the importance of floral resources and plant diversity in favouring the presence of the arthropods studied. Finally, the last chapter is devoted to a sowing experiment and its monitoring over two years. Three types of grassing were compared: high-diversity sowing, spontaneous vegetation and inter-rows without vegetation. In line with the second chapter, our results highlight the positive effects of plant richness and flower cover on weed control, the abundance of beneficial arthropods and the predation function. All the results of this thesis work converge and highlight the importance of considering different vegetation parameters to favour beneficial arthropods in viticulture.

"... rewilding is nonetheless a complementary approach to ecological restoration".

Restoring ecosystems or rewilding: what is the best approach for restoring an ecosystem that has been disturbed by human activity? The question is the subject of much debate among scientists and ecologists.

A recent study published in the journal Biological Conservation in February 2024 provides some answers.

In particular, the scientists compared the impact on grassland ecosystems in France. They compared the repercussions for the environment of the introduction of a wild herbivorous mammal, in this case the horse of Przewalski with those of domesticated mammals such as sheep and horses.

In this interview, the doctoral student at IMBE (IUT Avignon) Clémentine Mutillod explains this research.

European Life VineAdapt project at the IUT d'Avignon UNIVERSITY

16 October 2023, Avignon University IUT was the venue for training on budget management for international Life projects.

The course was led by financial expert : Barbora Patockova of the Ernst & Youngcommissioned by the European Union.

The French partners in the project, Avignon University - IMBE and the Marrenon wine cooperative (Luberon), invited their German, Hungarian and Austrian colleagues to visit their experimental wine-growing plots in the Luberon and the partners' premises at IUTthe Bonnieux cellar and the cooperative in La Tour-d'Aigues.

The purpose of the visit was also to discuss the progress of the project and the next stage of the works.
The main challenge of the project Life VineAdapt is the resilience of wine-growing agroecosystems in the face of climate change.

Following on from previous work, we are working on the assumption that a richer biodiversity and better adapted vineyard management will enable better adaptation to the future climate. The work of the French partners focuses on the ecosystem services associated with diversified inter-row grassing, and on the ecological impact of irrigation - increasingly used in Mediterranean viticulture. The French study area is the Luberon.

The work in France is led by two teacher-researchers from the Avignon University IUT: Armin Bischoff and Olivier Blight and involve two doctoral students Léo Rocher and Émile Melloul also based at IUT Avignon University.

CLARANOR welcomes 2nd year Packaging Emballage et Conditionnement students on Friday 6 October 2023

" Friday 6 October 2023, students from Packaging, Packaging - 2nd year (PEC2) were welcomed to the company CLARANORspecialising in the development of decontamination equipment using pulsed light, by its Director Christophe RIEDEL to whom we extend our warmest thanks.

Christophe RIEDEL spoke about new developments at CLARANOR which are the subject of patent applications, if not to prevent counterfeiting, to enable the company to market its equipment. In a packaging regulatory context where Reuse, Reduction and Recyclability (AGEC Law) are guiding company investments, the company CLARANOR offers them solutions that are compatible with changes in the market: in the ultra-fresh sector, decontamination of preformed PET/rPET jars (instead of PP, as rPET is the only plastic suitable for contact with food) to prevent them from deforming (following heat treatment with H2O2); int/ext decontamination of packaging returned by consumers to the self-service section of supermarkets before being reused, or in shops for cosmetics.

In the assembly workshop, we were able to see equipment for decontaminating in-line corks or cosmetics packaging for re-use.

We would like to extend our warmest thanks to Christophe RIEDEL for welcoming us to the company. CLARANOR.

On Wednesday 29 March, the students of BUT1 and BUT2 Packaging, Emballage et Conditionnement went to the Grenier à Sel, a space dedicated to contemporary art, to visit the exhibition "Et pourtant elle tourne!

Photo of a contemporary art exhibition at the Grenier à Sel.

This exhibition presents some forty works by the artist Samuel Rousseau and has a particularly enriching dimension in terms of the materials and techniques used.

Through an alliance between image technologies and recycled objects, the artist stages the fracas of the modern world faced with the infinite time of the universe with a strong dose of humour and a certain narrative poetry. Overconsumption and mass media, the alienation of man, the invasive role of technology and the vital impulse of nature feed his works which express a form of revolt while remaining light and funny in appearance.

The visit of such an exhibition was an opportunity for the students of both classes to sharpen their aesthetic technical eye... An experience to be repeated!
